BFI SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES 2020

  1. Develop policy & practices re environmental sustainability.

  2. Set goals & distribute sustainability memos that communicate BFI sustainability objectives to Members /Volunteers / Vendors / VIP's / Exhibitors. Set up a members only newsletter for members on the website.

  3. Work with Vendors & Exhibitors to incorporate sustainable behaviours & messaging on their communication channels.

  4. Create Graphics that depict sustainability objectives on promotional materials.

  5. Participate in a community give back program. Volunteerism, tree planting, food drive.

  6. Recycle or donate unused equipment and items.

  7. Promote cycling to Fall Fair: prep, fair day and wrap.

  8. Include green tips on communications to Members, Volunteers, Vendors & Exhibitors.

BEST PRACTICES

  1. Eliminate unnecessary paper usage.

  2. Eliminate unnecessary plastic usage, especially single use.

  3. Use paper containing 100% recycled content.

  4. Choose swag for volunteers that messages sustainability, i.e. reusable water bottles.

  5. Design reusable volunteer t-shirts.

  6. Purchase locally.

  7. Use reusable bags & boxes.

WASTE & RECYCLING 

  1. Use paperless software solutions for communications: website, Facebook, digital records.

  2. Implement an opt in policy for hard copies of documents.

  3. If printing is required, set printer to double sided. Use a font that requires less printer ink: Century Gothic, Garamond, Courier or Times New Roman

  4. Survey vendors for what they are serving food in.

  5. Eliminate #6 polystyrene from vendors.

  6. Encourage compostable food wraps.

  7. Establish reusable dishes and cutlery process.

  8. Survey vendors re food waste - how will they dispense of?

  9. Encourage vegetarian options.

  10. Survey re: Serving locally grown & produced food.

  11. Egg sellers to sell hardboiled eggs.

  12. Create a responsible water dispenser.

  13. Eliminate single use water bottles.

  14. Supply lunch provider with reusable serving trays. Research this  - box lined with tinfoil

  15. Eliminate decorations on zucchinis, which pose feed problems when recycled to local hog farms.

  16. Remind fair attendees to bring own refillable water bottles.

  17. Be Zero Waste ambassadors. How to achieve reduce, reuse, recycle.

  18. Invite Zero Waste Education team to set up education station.

  19. Porta Potties: revaluate quantity & locations by checking at end of fair day.

ENERGY PROVISIONS

  1. Electric lights on field - insert energy efficient.

  2. Electric lights in Exhibit tent - insert energy efficient.

  3. Electric lights in Sea Cans - insert ones that provide heat.

  4. Electrical supply for vendors x 4 stalls only. Communicate how much power they have access to. Charge a fee for power supply (which will cover other costs).

  5. Generators - determine how many will be brought by vendors.
